This shrine is a tribute to my mother, Yumiko Fujii . She died young at the age of forty-eight and this year marks the thirtieth year of her passing. She suffered from severe depression towards the end of her life and my family was immobilized in helping her. After she died, I felt hurt and angry for many years because she died young and left us.
In 2006, I began to make art around my mother to help me heal from her death. This process ultimately brought out emotions of understanding and loving kindness. Calling in her spirit, her essence returns in this intimate and temporal setting, which reinforces my mother’s absence and presence in my life. It is a place where memories, love and compassion live.
